  1. c. 1650-1715. British engineer who invented
  2. the steam-driven water pump, precursor of the
  3. steam engine, in 1696. The pump used a boiler
  4. to raise steam, which was condensed (in a
  5. separate condenser) by an external spray of
  6. cold water. The partial vacuum created sucked
  7. water up a pipe from the mine shaft; steam
  8. pressure was then used to force the water
  9. away, after which the cycle was repeated.
